Isn't it just great that we can communicate the next new thing on the music scene, via a simple tweet containing a YouTube recommendation? Or a direct link to an artist's direct Soundcloud page before their no longer a free agent.
Many artists, thanks to the belief of the many supporters who pro-actively promote via social media platforms, have gained record deals etc... That's social media at its priceless best. But has the eagerness to share musical experiences become something of a hindrance to the enjoyment of gigs or festivals?
With Social Media and smart phones collaborating like one Jay Z and Beyoncé, often find the crowd is swarmed with hands in the air. But not because the act on stage has demanded to "wave your hands in the air wave them like your just don't care". No it's because many of the attending crowd, are already filming or taking pictures of the act just 5 minutes into the performance.
Have you fallen into the unfortunate position of someone who just so happens to have got the best seat in the house, just to enjoy the performance through the lens of their smartphone? Are many festival goers now becoming uncool versions of Daft Punk’s robot image, just to be first at broadcasting and sharing information for likes and RTs?
It ponders the question, what would Ron Burgundy do? Will the anticipation and eagerness of wanting to buy tickets and experience the feeling of music live start to decrease? Some festivals like Coachella embrace new media, and provide a stream for the fans of performers around the world to enjoy. Which is the cool way to share, but are you one of Darth Vader’s storm troopers? It’s not too late to solve this trend, and then become a super cool Jedi.
