Entertainment: EE says bye bye Orange Wednesday

Has any mobile provider ever had an idea better than, Orange's announcement of  "Orange Wednesdays" way back in 2003? Two tickets for the price of one, every Wednesday to watch movies, some which have gone on to become modern day classics (cough cough watched certain movies like four times in a row thanks to that deal).

This add on service Orange provided us with was a game changer. Snap it had people asking around for codes on FB, Twitter etc.... like some amateur hackers. We all love the cinema, and Orange saw that gap in the market and ran with. They even allowed some people who only knew about Perfect Pizza (we all have some local only one of one branded pizza franchise in our area) or Pizza Hut to enjoy the delicious and better pizza from Pizza Express. Jheeze due to PizzaExpress, some people started eating their pizza with knife and folk like it was a Sunday Roast. Round of applause to the executive who came up with that idea, as the number of people that signed up for Orange network contracts, must've surely earned them a bonus.
Well ladies and gentlemen that person who came up with that game changer idea, I assume is no longer at the company. It's been confirmed that Orange now EE (aka everything everywhere) have cancelled the 2 for 1 and PizzaExpress deal (guess everything everywhere doesn't mean 2 for 1 tickets). Yes those decision making people at EE who've merged Orange and T-Mobile has decided to cancel this in February  2015. You know just after Christmas when everyone is saving and still wants to have a little entertainment.... yeah that's when we'll cancel Orange Wednesday.

You know February is home to Valentine's Day, and next year Fifty Shades Of Grey comes out intake for that. So expect the cinemas to have an attendance level of Notting Hill Carnival or a Beyonce concert.  A statement on their website reads "Orange Wednesday is coming to an end. "You have until Wednesday 25th February to take advantage of our 2 for 1 cinema tickets and PizzaExpress Offer". And guess who they're indirectly claiming to have helped make this announcement for them *drum roll please*...... US!! That's right you and I (well more you guys, because I don't have a online streaming account).
Let's look at the reason behind it, let's address the elephant in the room. Going to the cinema although it's still a great experience, it's now a damn expensive one. I mean something that's got a health warning on it like cigarettes are cheaper to buy than a cinema ticket. I watched Guardians Of The Galaxy at IMAX for damn near £20. Was the movie and  and watching it on the IMAX screen an experience, yes it was indeed. But Odeon could at least offer you a cup of popcorn or a teaspoon of M&Ms included in that price (yeah you can't use Orange Wednesday at IMAX). But that's a bad example to use as IMAX viewing is of choice and is the best screen in town. Normal cinemas start ticket prices roughly around £8.00, that means four times a month will cost £32.00 without any condiments to enjoy during the movie. This is where you Netflixers come in, I get it it's cheaper to watch at the comfort of your own home a month than going to the cinema. Netflix currently costs £5.99 a month which is going up by a £1 soon, but even then still cheaper.
To date there's 3million and counting Netflixers in the UK, which they reached two months ago in October. Their rival Amazon Prime which came out latter part of this year, already has 1.2million subscribers. So the internet and cost of viewing has heavily contributed to this  announcement from Orange. And when statements like "Viewing habits have evolved" and "That's why the final credits will roll for Orange Wednesdays at the end of February 2015. We're working on new customer entertainment rewards and we'll provide more detail soon." from EE spokesperson, it's pretty clear as day. So let's enjoy it will it's still here and let's see what better (if even possible) ideas EE comes up with.
